Google Creates New Tools to Help U.S. Veterans in the Job Market

We’re always discussing the need to hire in the home services industry. Well, who better to hire than veterans?

Each year, over 200,000 veterans transition to civilian life, many of whom have the skills that are needed for home services.

However, there is oftentimes a disconnect between available talent and hiring. To bridge that gap, Google has built a tool to help veterans during their job search and a tool to help promote veteran-run businesses.

How Google’s Tool Improves Job Searches

Veterans acquire countless skills while in the military, but it can be challenging to identify those skills while looking for a job. Why? Quite simply, the language isn’t the same! For many veterans, navigating the civilian job search is unfamiliar, and their resumes might not correlate with typical hiring buzzwords.

Since most job searches start with a Google search, Google’s new tool connects veterans to jobs they may not have seen before. Best of all, it only takes a simple search query to get started. When a veteran searches, “jobs for veterans”, a form will immediately appear in search results asking for a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) code. Google will then display relevant job openings, allowing veterans to scroll and click through to jobs that interest them.

Google’s tool displays available jobs in a centralized place, making it easy for veterans to search through jobs that they may have not have ever had the chance to see. Because Google asks for a veteran’s MOS code, every job displayed correlates directly to their skills and those hiring managers are looking to interview veteran talent.

Highlighting Veteran-Led Businesses

Google also created a new “Veteran-Led” attribute for any business that is owned, led, or founded by a veteran. A veteran can add this attribute to their Google My Business Profile, enhancing their “About” section with this detail. It’s an easy and visual way to help veterans searching for jobs, and patrons looking to learn more about a business’s story.

Bridging the Gap Between Military and Civilian Life

Google’s new tools are great resources that will help connect veterans with businesses looking for skilled employees. It’s an easy way for a home services business to hire exceptional talent, and a big technological step in bridging the hiring gap.
